Ham Equipment and Radio background of Bob Sanford, KC5SMC

2-1-2010

I first became interested in radio as a youngster building various Heathkit projects. Actually, two cans and a string came before that but that’s another story. Like many others I became interested in CB radio in the 70’s and carried that about as far as I could. Also I had a Radiotelephone operator license and operated VHF-FM Marine during the 70’s. In the late 80’s while participating in competitive cycling I began to notice all the HAMS helping out with bike tours and races and decided to get my ticket. So in 1996 I became KC5SMC. To get Charlotte motivated I bought her a brand new Yaesu dualband for her Suburban but did not install the microphone. I knew she would not be able to stand being left out of the conversation. So she became KD5BKC. Through the years we have worked together in just about every HAM radio scenario you can think of and opened so many doors to fun, education, and public service. The experience has been all and more than I ever imagined it would be. But most of all Charlotte and I have been blessed with so many good friends who we might not have met if it weren’t for the world of Amateur Radio.
